PREPARING FOR RETIREMENT OR AN INCAPACITY FOR WORK

OASI, DI and helplessness allowances: several benefits may concern you throughout your self-employed career, whether at retirement, in the event of a long-term incapacity for work, or when daily assistance is required. Unlike an employee, you must handle all the necessary procedures yourself, with no employer to assist you.

OLD-AGE PENSION (OASI)

The OASI pension is never paid automatically: it must be claimed 3 to 4 months before the chosen retirement date. You may also take retirement early from the age of 63 or defer it for up to 5 years, with a direct impact on the pension amount.

DISABILITY INSURANCE (DI)

If a health condition permanently limits your capacity to work, you may submit a claim yourself to the DI office in your canton of residence, or report your situation for early detection if you are not yet certain that you will need a pension.

HELPLESSNESS ALLOWANCE

If you require regular and substantial assistance from another person to carry out everyday activities, such as getting up, washing or moving around, you may be entitled to a helplessness allowance, paid in addition to any DI or OASI pension.

Our frequently asked questions

Do I need to apply for my OASI pension myself?

Yes. As you do not have an employer to handle this for you, you must submit your application directly to our compensation office, 3 to 4 months before your chosen retirement date.

What should I do if I can no longer carry out my work for health reasons?

Contact the Disability Insurance (DI) office in your canton of residence to assess your situation. An early detection notification may be appropriate if you have been unable to work for some time but are not yet sure whether you will need a disability pension.

When should I apply for my OASI pension as a self-employed person?

The OASI pension is not paid automatically. You must submit an application to your compensation office several months before your intended retirement date. Applying in advance helps to avoid any delays in the payment of your benefits.

Can I continue to be self-employed after retirement age?

Yes. You can continue to be self-employed after reaching the OASI reference age. Depending on your circumstances, income earned after this age may affect your social security contributions and, in some cases, the future calculation of your pension. We recommend contacting our specialists to discuss your individual situation.
